PHUKET : Organisers of the Surin Beach New Year’s party failed to demonstrate the benefits of hosting the party for the local community despite holding a meeting of all the stakeholders, late last week.
According to Phuket News the organiser was supposed to convince the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Phuket office, local shops, Surin hotels they would garner financial benefits for allowing the party to be hosted on the beach.
Earlier a group of foreign hotel managers on Surin bay complained that the party would cut into their revenue and drive away guests over the New Year.
The mega-countdown event is being organised by Sydictive Element World Class DJ Festival, 30 to 31 December.
It should draw 50,000 participants and have 4,000 staff including 2,000 guards recruited from the Tourist Police, army and navy.
The company was given clearance to host the New Year countdown event, earlier in the year, by various agencies including the Tourism Authority of Thailand, but the meeting was called to review the project after complaints it would disturb the peace.
To add yet another problem, the organiser said they intended to use floats offshore for some of the party features, a move that would require permission from the Phuket Marine Department.
That might not be forthcoming as the Phuket Marine Department director, Phuriphat Kulpisut, said he had not received a request from the organisers. Phuket’s governor, Maitree Intusut and TAT Phuket office director, Chanchai Duangchit, have already given their blessing.
Officially, the Phuket Marine Office says it has no intention of approving construction of a floating stage or any other structures on the beach until all parties are in agreement and the Thalang District Office has approved the use of the public area for a party. The event is supposed to have a 70 metre long and 20 metre wide floating stage for a fireworks display.
